Herbig Ae/Be Stars in nearby OB associations

چکیده
We have carried out a study of the early type stars in nearby OB associations spanning an age range of ∼ 3 to 16 Myr, with the aim of determining the fraction of stars which belong to the Herbig Ae/Be class. We studied the B, A, and F stars in the nearby (≤ 500 pc) OB associations Upper Scorpius, Perseus OB2, Lacerta OB1, and Orion OB1, with membership determined from Hipparcos data. We also included in our study the early stars in the Trumpler 37 cluster, part of the Cep OB2 association. We obtained spectra for 440 Hipparcos stars in these associations, from which we determined accurate spectral types, visual extinctions, effective temperatures, luminosities and masses, using Hipparcos photometry. Using colors corrected for reddening, we find that the Herbig Ae/Be stars and the Classical Be stars (CBe) occupy clearly different regions in the JHK diagram. Thus, we use the location on the JHK diagram, as well as the presence of emission lines and of strong 12 μm flux relative to the visual to identify the Herbig Ae/Be stars in the associations. We find that the Herbig Ae/Be stars constitute a small fraction of the early type stellar population even in the younger associations. Comparing the data from associations with different ages and assuming that the nearinfrared excess in the Herbig Ae/Be stars arises from optically thick dusty inner disks, we determined the evolution of the inner disk frequency with age. We find that the inner disk frequency in the age range 3 10 Myr in intermediate mass stars is lower than that in the low mass stars (< 1 M⊙); in particular, it is a factor of ∼ 10 lower at ∼ 3 Myr. This indicates that the time-scales for disk evolution are much shorter in the intermediate mass stars, which could be a consequence of more efficient mechanisms of inner disk dispersal (viscous evolution, dust growth and settling toward the midplane). Star Formation and Molecular Clouds towards the Galactic Anti-Center
The Galactic Anticenter region hosts a a number of massive molecular cloud complexes, some of which are currently actively forming stars. Two major OB associations, Gem OB1 and Aur OB1, are found in this direction, each with numerous massive stars and a supernova remnant. The dominant region of star formation is centered around the Sh 2-235 complex and the nearby regions AFGL 5142, 5144, and 51...
متن کاملTriggered Star Formation by Massive Stars
We present our diagnosis of the role that massive stars play in the formation of lowand intermediate-mass stars in OB associations (the λ Ori region, the OriOB1, and LacOB1 associations). We find that the classical T Tauri stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars tend to line up between luminous O stars and brightrimmed or comet-shaped clouds; the closer to a cloud the progressively younger they are. Our p...
متن کاملNEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE X-RAY EMISSION OF HD 104237 AND OTHER NEARBY HERBIG Ae/Be STARS FROM XMM-NEWTON AND CHANDRA
The origin of the X-ray emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars is not yet known. These intermediate-mass pre–mainsequence stars lie on radiative tracks and are not expected to emit X-rays via solar-like magnetic processes, nor are their winds powerful enough to produce X-rays by radiative wind shocks as in more massive O-type stars. The emission could originate in unseen low-mass companions, or it ma...
متن کاملMid infrared emission of nearby Herbig Ae / Be stars ?
We present mid IR spectro-photometric imaging of a sample of eight nearby (D ≤ 240 pc) Herbig Ae/Be stars. The spectra are dominated by photospheric emission (HR6000), featureless infrared excess emission (T Cha), broad silicate emission feature (HR5999) and the infrared emission bands (HD 97048, HD 97300, TY CrA, HD 176386). The spectrum of HD179218 shows both silicate emission and infrared em...
متن کاملDo Herbig Ae / Be stars have discs ?
Hα spectropolarimetry on Herbig Ae/Be stars shows that the innermost regions of intermediate mass (2 – 15 M⊙) Pre-Main Sequence stars are flattened. This may be the best evidence to date that the higher mass Herbig Be stars are embedded in circumstellar discs. A second outcome of our study is that the spectropolarimetric signatures for the lower mass Herbig Ae stars differ from those of the hig...
